The Creative Retreat – Providence, Rhode Island

The Creative Retreat is a two-day experience for hairdressers and creatives who want to step out of survival mode and reconnect with themselves as artists.

Created and led by Candice McKay, the Providence edition takes place within the rich creative and academic culture of Rhode Island, offering a focused pause inside a city known for its independent spirit, design heritage and close-knit creative community. It’s a chance to slow down, step away from routine, and reconnect with your creative direction, without disconnecting from the real world you work in.

Across two days, we work through mood boards, concept building, visual storytelling, trend forecasting and social media strategy. The focus is on turning instinct and raw ideas into intentional, expressive work that feels relevant, contemporary and personal.

Alongside this, mindful practices are woven through the retreat to help reset focus, release creative fatigue and support clearer thinking. The aim is not to do more, but to work with greater presence and intention.

We also explore how ideas move from concept to execution, so they can be applied confidently in real working contexts: for salons, personal branding, social media, competitions, PR and collection work.

You’ll be working within a small, intentional group of creatives. Conversation, exchange and shared observation are central to the experience, and the connections often continue well beyond the retreat itself.

Set within the creative landscape of Providence, home to RISD, independent studios and a thriving arts scene. The retreat draws energy from the surrounding culture while offering a grounded, supportive space for deep creative work.

The Creative Retreat Vienna is a four-day residential experience designed for hairdressers and creatives who want to slow down, reconnect with their creative centre, and work with greater depth and intention.

Created in collaboration with Carmen Subota, hairstylist, yoga instructor and journaling coach. This retreat brings together creative direction, reflective practice and wellbeing to support sustainable, meaningful creativity.

Across four days, the retreat blends concept development, visual storytelling and creative identity work with yoga, journaling and guided reflective practices. Together, these elements create space to release creative fatigue, restore balance and reconnect with the clarity that allows ideas to emerge naturally.

You’ll work with mood boards, concept building and trend awareness, while also exploring how your creative voice is shaped by how you see, feel and respond to the world. The focus is on creating work that feels grounded, intentional and aligned, rather than rushed, forced or performative.

This is a residential retreat, designed to be lived rather than attended. With accommodation included, participants are able to fully settle into the experience, stay present, and move through the retreat without the usual distractions of daily life.

There is no pressure to perform or produce. The retreat is unbranded and non-competitive, creating a supportive community where shared thinking, openness and genuine connection come before comparison.

The retreat takes place at Mash Studio, a creative incubator and community space that values inclusion, sustainability and independent thinking.
